ROBS PROJECT HOPE ADOPTS FOUR FAMILIES
POSTED 7/5/10

Each year during the winter holiday seasons, the organization, Suburban Children, sends us families in need. This year through ROBS Project Hope, run by Peter Vercillo, adopted four families. The following is a letter received from Suburban Children in appreciation for Robs efforts:

Dear ROBS Members.
On behalf of the four families you adopted for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of you. These parents have had extreme hardships this past year and your generosity greatly eased their worries.
As we all know from the media; this has been an extremely difficult time for low income and homeless families. Without the kindness and support you have demonstrated, our families would have had little to bring them joy this year.
Again, I thank you for all your support. I wish you a healthy, safe and Happy New
Year.

Sincerely.
Michele Beecher

TEACHERS, TAKE A LESSON
Printed from Newsday, "My Turn" Saturday, June 26 2010

Being retired teachers, and now co-authors of children's picture storybooks, we spend the majority of our time visiting schools.
We are sometimes disappointed at the lack of a dress code in so many schools among the adults. We always try to look our best; a bright blouse, appropriate accessories, casual pants, or something that would be pleasing to the children and staff.
When writing our book series about a teacher [sustrinbooks.Com], we created a character who always dressed as a teacher should. We like to think that we have influenced youngsters to want to look their best,
There is a definite place for flip-flops, shorts and tank tops in schools. However, all of these should be worn at special occasions like picnics, dress-down days and other informal events.
It's so easy to be traditional and modem at the same time. It just takes thought when you prepare your clothing each morning. Think of where you'll be going, who you'll be with and what you'll be doing. "Grown-ups are role models for our future generation!"

VOTE/COPE BULLETIN TO ROBS MEMBERS
POSTED 7/7/10

From Marge Kirchner, Treasurer

Up to this point, your Board has been accepting VOTE COPE contributions to send to New York State. Accepting those contributions isn’t a simple act. Each member's name, contribution amount and check number must be put into a data base. That takes time and mailing them to Albany takes postage that seems to rise in price all the time.
More importantly, we don't get membership credit for those checks I forward to the state. Last year we had almost 100 checks submitted to me for VOTE COPE. Yet, ROBS only received membership credit for 57 contributors. Those 57 contributors were members who are enrolled in pension deduction.
Pension deduction for VOTE COPE is very simple and we greatly encourage you to sign up. The form on the back of this bulletin will guide you as to how to do it. Look at it this way, if you have a pension deduction of $2.00 per month, it will cost you $24.00 dollars per year. A $3.00 deduction will cost you $36.00 per year. YOU control the amount.
PLEASE sign up for pension deduction for the organization that affords amazing benefits to all retirees. This is a win-win situation! You don't have to write a check, I don't have to do the paperwork involved in recording your contribution and mailing it to the state, AND the state will credit our local with more contributors.
In keeping with this information, starting with this notice, we will NOT be accepting any more checks for VOTE COPE.

Sincerely.
Marge Kirchner
Treasurer

A NOTE FROM ELEANOR STEFFEN
POSTED 7/10/10

Hi, I enjoyed a beautiful day with a student from my painting class at Sonderling in 1973. Wonderful Vinny de Giralamo could not attend the opening of my current gallery show because his son was getting married that day. WHAT A HOOT. THE FOLLOWING WEEK VINNY AND HIS PARENTS VISITED AND SAW THE SHOW. The day was flooded with warm memories and validation that teachers touch lives.

SAD NEWS FROM ELEANOR BAZATA
POSTED 7/10/10

Ruth Bernhardt, Northeast Secretary from 1954 to 1979 has passed away in Livermore, California. She had many friends in the Brentwood school district who I'm sure would like to be aware of her passing. Her son (My nephew) states they will have a service for her in Livermore on Sunday, July 18, but services and Burial in Brentwood cemetery have not been arranged for as yet and he will notify me when they are. Would you kindly pass this on?
