ROBS PROJECT HOPE
WINTER 2010

POSTED 2/15/10

A letter from Peter Vercillo
Project Hope Chairperson

Dear PROJECT HOPE Supporter:
Due to the collective generosity of ROBS members, PROJECT HOPE successfully continued it's tradition of assisting families of the Brentwood School District. This year was our greatest financially, which we accomplished with 96 contributors. Because of your donations, we were able to reach more people than ever. The Retirees of Brentwood Schools have consistently shown significant commitment to the community.

Once again, mention must be made of the ROBS volunteers who shopped, donated, stored, wrapped, and distributed the hundreds of items that were amassed. This undertaking took great care, patience, constant searches for ways to stretch our funds, and a great deal of their time during this busiest of seasons.
Thank you very much for making this annual drive the success that it has been. Best wishes to all ROBS members for a prosperous 2010.

Sincerely,
Peter Vercillo
ROBS/ Project Hope Chairperson

WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW
LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF NEWSDAY
POSTED 01/25/10

A Dream Deferred
By John Sherin

 Dear NEWSDAY:
Regarding the NEWSDAY editorial attached, and primarily as a concerned citizen I would suggest that one of the most precious jewels of our Long Island was completely overlooked and went unmentioned in the piece. I am referring to the Orson Fowler octagonal building and original Modern Times School House built in 1857 in Brentwood, NY. It became that planned utopian community's first one room Public School House.

It is seen standing here as it was and as it is, on the website of the Retirees of Brentwood Schools www.robsny.org where it serves as constant reminder to former employees of the 'Dream Deferred' of restoration and preservation. After years of false starts, controversy and finger pointing still stand between the dream and the reality. All this is happening in a populous district that sees miracles performed in classrooms every day while its' leadership is meeting the next fiscal challenge in all too familiar tough economic times. Long Island may one day have to bear witness with Brentwood, to the loss of yet another of its' uniquely precious jewels, The Modern Times School House, unless that is, higher nature and the powers that be, can find a way to preserve the past while courageously and characteristically embracing the future.
